Hardscapes – You CAN Do It Yourself!

Go back

Hardscapes are among the prettiest modifications a homeowner can make.  They involve a lot of planning – and maybe some heavy lifting – but even a novice DIY homeowner can create beautiful hardscapes with some ingenuity and elbow grease.

Pavers: Most hardscapes involve pavers or patio stones.  For those DIY hardscapes, you’ll want to plan out what works best with the existing design of your home.  Large stone blocks make a nice alternative pathway across lawns, and can be bordered by low-lying bushes or brightly colored flowers to emphasize their path.  If your lawn slopes up, you can even design your pavers like stepping stones.  All-purpose weather proofing agents can keep them looking new all year round.

Rock Gardens: For the more adventurous DIYer, a rock garden can add a touch of the exotic.  This type of hardscape needs careful planning, so that you can order the correct amount of stones.  Larger rocks and trees like weeping willows will add depth and dimension to this type of hardscape.  Just be sure to install a barrier along the border to keep the rocks in where they belong.

Stone Walls and Water Features: Stone walls add beauty to any DIY hardscape, but they aren’t easy to tackle alone.  Unless you have experience with leveling soil, brickwork and plumbing, it’s best to leave these projects to the professionals.  Still, additions like stone walls and fountains add a touch of class to any hardscape.  If they’re a bit out of reach, you can always install a ready-made koi pond in your lawn.  Most don’t require an additional water source after the original filling, and filters can be purchased at most major retailers.  For some added flair, try building a small stone-based hardscape around the pond.
