Five Ways to Prepare Your Home for Winter

Winter is a challenging season for your home, and that is why it is so critical to make sure that your home is ready for the harsh weather conditions ahead. Preparing your home for winter is not as difficult as it may sound. Here are five ways you can prepare for winter and fully enjoy the season without the added worry of your home’s declining condition.

Your furnace is your ally, not your enemy:  Contrary to popular belief, your furnace does not plot against you all year. In fact, if you clean your furnace once a year, you can easily reduce the risk of a fire hazard and make your home more energy efficient.

Keep your home warm during the winter:  Insulation is one of your best bets in keeping your home toasty this winter. Adding insulation to your attic and placing weather stripping seals on your windows and doors will help you keep the draft out of your home this winter season. In addition, you can greatly reduce the cost of heating your home when you add insulation and weather stripping.

Clean your gutters:  If you want to minimize the risk of snow damaging your roof, cleaning your gutters is an excellent way to give all that snow a place to go when it melts. Unclogging leaves and other debris from your gutters will help you ensure your roof can stand up to the winter season ahead.

Brighten things up:  As we all know, winter means loss of daylight. In terms of keeping your home well-lit and saving money, now is the best time to add energy-saving light fixtures to the exterior of your home. Not only will your home be safely lit, so you can avoid patches of ice on your home’s walkway, but you can save money, too.

Don’t forget to prepare your air ducts:  When it comes to preparing your home for winter, do not forget one of the greatest causes of heat loss: your air ducts. If you have a central heat and air system, be sure that all of your air ducts are insulated and properly sealed to maximize energy efficiency.
