Agaves are a great plant to use in small spaces, considering their ability to grow in containers. With over 200 species of agave, there is enough variety so that there is the right agave plant for everyone. Whether you’re looking to use an agave plant in your garden space, entryway, or as an outdoor table centerpiece, agaves are a great plant for the summer since they do well in the heat and require little watering. This variety of agave from Coahuila, Mexico is distinct due to its sharp edges, making it a great addition to a small space because of its dramatic shape. The white outline is a nice contrast to its green leaves. The King Ferdinand agave plant resembles the Queen Victoria agave plant (below).

It’s easy to see how the Artichoke agave got its name, since it resembles the artichoke leaves we can eat. Its blue-gray color makes it a desirable design addition to any small space, especially an outdoor space. The Artichoke agave can be used in containers in rows of multiples or on its own, since it stands out amongst other plants because of its striking beauty.

Native to Mexico and named after Queen Victoria, this popular agave variety is perfect for small spaces due to it being about 18 inches both tall and wide. Its striking white outline makes a nice contrast to its vibrant green leaves, just like the King Ferdinand. The Queen Victoria agave is one of the most popular agaves.

Compacta Queen Victoria Agave

The ‘Compacta’ Queen Victoria agave is simply a smaller version of the popular Queen Victoria agave. Compared to the latter’s 18 inches, the Compacta usually only grows to 12 inches tall and wide. Since this agave is so small, it’s best to plant them in groups of three or more.

This agave variety is a hybrid of the Agave attenuata and Agave ocahui, but doesn’t look like either of them. The ‘Blue Glow’ agave has dark blue-green leaves, which make it a nice design addition to an outdoor space. This agave variety grows 2 feet tall and wide.
